The story of an African (no country is named) boy's involvement with a group of guerilla fighters during his country's civil war. Correspondent: I know that with the novel you wrote, Beasts of No Nation, you started off to some degree not just with news articles, but you actually met a soldier for that particular work. I found Uzodinma Iweala's Beasts of No Nation particularly compelling in his use of language. 21 - Uzodinma Iweala's brutal debut novel, "Beasts of No Nation," is filled with the stink of violence. Writer Uzodinma Iweala's second book, "Our Kind of People," is about HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. Young and Privileged, but Writing Vividly of Africa's Child Soldiers. From The New York Times: Iwea184 POTOMAC, Md., Nov. It feels like a long short story to me, partly because of its single, straightforward plot and limited cast of characters. 2005 Uzodinma Iweala stunned readers and critics alike with Beasts of No Nation, his debut novel about child soldiers in West Africa. The winners of the 2012 National Book Critics Circle Awards were announced last night in a ceremony at the New School in New York City. In an epigraph at the beginning of his new novel, All That Is, James Salter announces that he now realizes everything is a dream, the only reality is that which is preserved in writing. Beasts of No Nation Uzodinma Iweala, 2005. It's not the easiest book to love, but I think it's an important book and is truly spectacular if you get into it. Bee Season Myla Goldberg , 2001. Description: In this stunning debut novel, Agu, a young boy in an unnamed West African nation, is recruited into a unit of guerrilla fighters as civil war engulfs his country. Written as a novel, Iweala has taken bits and pieces of child solders worldwide, and formed a conglomerate child soldier in his character Agu. This book (Beasts of No Nation by Uzodinma Iweala) is, I'd say, annoyingly good. I'm sure he's happy to get his story out there, but I'd think it must feel at least a little strange at some level. Our young protagonist, Agu, Iweala's novel, however, aims to distance the reader from the character. I'm reading beasts of no nation right now and it is verrrrrrrrry unique.
